AN URBAN MAMA'S TAKE ON NURTURING HER FAMILY

Ignorance is not bliss

Yesterday, while folding laundry I watched 'Honey, We're Killing the Kids (episode 2)' on FoodTV. One scene had me sobbing! How weird is it too cry while watching a program on FoodTV! This British family has 7 televisions in the house but were not remotely aware that their eating habits only consisted of empty calories. You'd think that with all the tv watching going on someone would have accidentally come across a show on nutrition or seen some people eating fresh fruit, or seen people drink fresh water, something! The part that made me cry was when the intervener told the parents to take the children, ages 11 and 9 to a farm so they learn where food comes from. Almost teenagers, yet lacking in such fundamentals. It made me very sad to think that world wide, there are millions of $rich$ kids out there whose parents are so ignorant when it comes to nutrition. How can a family, drowning in material abundance, be so ignorant?

What I took away from this is my resolve to buy even less organic yet processed packaged "convenience food". Cookies and crackers and snacks from the health food shop is still no match to what a fresh piece of fruit can give my family. Which leads me to confess: this morning jr cookie monster and I made a double batch of Dreena's Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies.

THANK YOU FOOD TV FOR SUCH A THOUGHT PROVOKING PROGRAM; IT HAS MARKED A VERY IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN MY PROCESS AS A HUMAN BEING AND A PARENT!

I completely understand how you feel- I wasn't able to watch more than one or two episodes of that show. I just wish that we as a nation, a continent, a culture, whatever, were more educated and empowered as a whole. Once you know some fundamental things, there are certain things that you just wouldn't eat or feed to your children, period.
Thank you for a thought-provoking post.
